TLC shows glorify trash

Founded as The Learning Channel, TLC has drifted far from its original values. Starting out as a channel to encourage learning, TLC has since changed its slogan to “Life Surprises” and started focusing on shows that include personal stories, and events that viewers could relate to. However, the station has since strayed even further from its slogan by airing shows that glorify trash and everything that is wrong with America.
One show that TLC airs that is a clear example of awful television is “Toddlers and Tiaras” which showcases families and their children’s journey to win titles and crowns in child beauty pageants. On many episodes, viewers see little girls dressed up from head to toe in full make up and heels. As if sexualizing these toddlers wasn’t enough, the show loses another star with its outrageous pageant mothers. While their children are competing in pageants these mothers are being anything but glamorous. On one episode of the series, two mothers got into a heated argument about whose daughter was the better competitor and the argument got so heated that pageant directors had to get involved and separate the two.
Another show that is a prime example of trash is “Gypsy Sisters” which follows the lives of four gypsy women and it showcases how different their lives as gypsies are compared to that of a “normal” everyday American. The show has everything from foul mouthed, ignorant, bitch slapping mothers to their pig headed husbands who believe the world revolves around them and as a team they encourage their children to grow up before they have had a chance to be children.
Many viewers are outraged with the amount of trash TLC has aired on their channel and have taken to the station’s website and official Facebook to voice their disgust with the once so called “Learning Channel.” One such user, Matt Mulhearn, posted a comment on the channel’s Facebook page, explaining that they “play the most horrible shows,” and that he “has the channel blocked.” Another user, Heather Ellision, posted a comment informing the channel that they have strayed far from their original values, and that while she used to love watching their shows, she has stopped watching the channel due to “the ridiculous amount of TV shows that show bad language, teen pregnancy and bad behavior in children.”
TLC has definitely strayed far from its original values—correction—it has lost any value the channel did have. Airing shows that promote foul language, fighting, teen pregnancy and the sexualizing of children, the channel now has no values and glorifies trash.
The channel needs to do a complete one eighty and drop these types of shows from their listings. TLC needs to return to such shows as “Adoption Stories” and “A Baby Story,” shows which depict the hardships people face when starting out a new family. Instead of glorifying trash, it needs to be taken off air and TLC needs to bring back educational shows that encourage learning rather than foul mouthed, bad behavior filled shows.
