With just a few short days until Thanksgiving, everyone is letting others know that they are thankful for them in their life. From Facebook posts every day letting your friends know what you are thankful for to sending friends text messages to let them know you are thankful for them, we are all giving thanks for the things we love and the ones we care for.

However, there is just one thing I don’t understand about Thanksgiving and how we give thanks for everything on the days leading up to it and the day of. We claim that we are thankful for the people and things in our lives, yet we only let them know on one day. The problem with Thanksgiving is that too many people wait until this one day to give thanks for what they have.

Thanksgiving is only one day out of the 365 that make up the year; why do we only give thanks on this one day? Many people go days, weeks and months without hearing a single nice thing or that someone is thankful for them. We let these people know one day out of the year that we are thankful for them, but why? Everyone needs a little reassurance every now and then: that they are liked and someone appreciates them. We see these people every day, yet we pick only one day out of the year to let them know that we are thankful for them. It makes no sense to me honestly. We claim to be thankful for these people, yet we never let them know.

We spend Thanksgiving worrying about who is coming, who is going where, and if the food is perfect, but what is the reason for the holiday? To give thanks for the people and things in our lives. Let those that you care about know you are thankful for their presence in your life; let them know you care. Why wait until Thanksgiving? Let them know every day! If you care about them as much as you claim to on Thanksgiving, then let them know the other 364 days of the year that you are thankful for them. Don’t wait for a holiday that comes once a year; tell them every single day.

So instead of waiting for the week or day of Thanksgiving to let those in your life that you are thankful for know that you are thankful for them, let them know every day. If not every day, then every now and then, but don’t wait for one day out of the year. Show them how truly thankful you are for them in your life, just remind them that you care and that you appreciate them being in your life.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and don’t forget to let those you love know that you care. Always.
