Sam Houston’s Sequeena Thomas recorded her 1,000th career rebound as the Bearkats beat the Nicholls State Colonels 70-63 to take sole possession of the Southland Conference on the road Saturday.
Thomas notched her 13th career double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds in the victory.
The Bearkats were previously in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Central Arkansas and Lamar.
Sam Houston State led 35-33 going in to half time but they did not control the game by any means. Due to a three point shooting frenzy by Nicholls’ Jenny Nash, the Kats were down by two points after leading by as much as eight. The Colonels made seven of 13 three pointers in the game.
Sam Houston’s Britni Martin finished the game with 16 points and three other Bearkats added double digit scores. Sally Clavelle had 13, Jasmine Johnson had 11 and Chanice Smith added 10 points.
The Bearkats will once again be on the road this Friday as they square off against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, who stand at last place in the Southland Conference.
