Sam Houston State University’s women soccer team went 0-1-1 to University of Texas-San Antonio and South Dakota State University this past weekend at the UTSA Classic.
The Bearkats put up 11 shots against UTSA Friday night with three shots from midfielder Megan Bennett and three from defender Ashley Alonzo, but they failed to find the back of the net. The team came up short to the Roadrunner’s 60th-minute goal to lose 1-0.
"We played with no energy in the first half but had a lot more passion in the second half," head coach Tom Brown said. "We thought we did enough to score a goal but we could not find the back of the net."
SHSU’s scoreless streak continued into Sunday’s match versus SDSU. The teams went the full 90 minutes in a scoreless tie and had to continue into two, 10-minute overtime periods.
The teams ended the game with a 0-0 draw.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton tied her career high in saves with 12 against SDSU, helping the Bearkats achieve their second shutout of the season.
SHSU also saw a significant decline in number of offside calls against them; going from 14 last week against Texas Southern University, compared to four against UTSA, and none against SDSU.
SHSU’s weekend performance contrasts their home opener 6-0 shutout against TSU on Aug. 25. The Bearkats six goals are the most the squad has recorded in one game since Sept. 2011.
SHSU (1-1-1) will travel to Denton, Texas to square off against the University of North Texas (2-0-2) this Friday at 7 p.m.
