The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team’s chances of hoisting the Southland Conference trophy were cut short Thursday in Lake Charles, La.

The Bearkats lost to Oral Robert in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament 2-0.

The Bearkats finished the season with a record of 7-11-1.

“I thought early on we created some good chances,” Kats head coach Tom Brown said. “Over the 90 minutes, I just don’t think we had that attacking mentally.”

ORU junior midfielder Jennifer Abernathy scored in the 32nd minute, her fourth on the year, to give her team an early 1-0 lead.

Freshman midfielder Ashley Martin then added to the Golden Eagle’s lead in the 60th minute as she scored on an assist from teammate Kayla Geller. It was Martin’s fourth goal on the season and Geller’s fourth assist.

Sam Houston had seven shots on goal in contrast to ORU’s six.

“We were just kind of hit and miss with us being able to possess,” Brown said.
