Sam Houston State University will kick-off their season on ESPN as part of ESPN’s new “FCS Kickoff” Aug. 23 against Eastern Washington.
The game will be the only college game on ESPN to air that day.
“It’s exciting to be the first game in the country on ESPN,” Sam Houston head football coach K. C. Keeler said. “To face a perennial national power like Eastern Washington is going to be a challenge. Our football team will be looking forward to the opportunity to test themselves on a national level.”
ESPN 3 aired 58 regular season games this past year, but no regular season game making it to ESPN. The inclusion of “FCS Kickoff” is something ESPN has been trying to do expose FCS nationally, ESPN director of programming and acquisitions Brent Colborne said.
“FCS conferences and member institutions are an important part of the overall fabric of collegiate athletics and ESPN’s programming schedule,” Colborne said. “We regularly talk with our league partners on opportunities for increased exposure and expansion of our content offerings. The FCS Kickoff is one result that will further showcase the quality and depth of FCS football to our national audience.”
The opening match-up between the Bearkats and Eagles is no strange thing to FCS.
SHSU defeated Eastern Washington at home 49-34 in the 2013 regular season. In the 2012 FCS playoffs, the Bearkats topped the Eagles 48-45 to advance to the FCS National Championship.
Kick-off is set for 2:30 in Cheney, Wash.
