Sam Houston State’s softball team open up their 2014 season Wednesday against the Texas A&M Aggies at the Bearkat Softball complex.
The last time these two ball clubs met was a year ago when the Bearkats were run-ruled 8-0.
The Aggies’ offense dominated as they banged out three home runs, one of those a three-run shot during the sixth inning.
The Aggies’ high-powered offense has continued to sustain them into the 2014 season. TAMU has won all five of their preseason games, racking up seven or more runs each game. In their 10-4 victory over Dayton, the Aggies started with fire, knocking out two home runs in the second inning.
They found their niche in the fifth inning when senior third baseman Amber Garza hit her second home run of the contest.
“We’ll have to play a good, clean game,” SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. “We’ll rely on our defense and pitching, but we can’t make simple mistakes against them.”
SHSU will have a new outlook against the Aggies this year as they have added several new faces to the team, and Brock expects to see early action from his freshmen.
The Bearkats will continue to build off momentum from last season’s Southland Conference tournament appearance where they posted a 5-1 record, defeating Northwestern State in the final game.
Despite lauding a strong performance last season and returning a veteran team, SHSU was slated third in the preseason coaches’ poll.
SHSU graduated four seniors last season, but Brock is optimistic about the upcoming season.
“We’ve been playing well,” he said. “We’re excited about playing.”
Opening pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
