Three hundred is a special number in bowling.
Although nobody bowled a perfect game, Sam Houston State’s bowling team gained its 300th dual match victory this weekend at the Panther Invitational in Arlington in just the team’s fourth season in NCAA.
The milestone came Friday afternoon after a 5-0 start to the tournament, including wins over ranked opponents No. 2 Maryland-Eastern Shore, No. 3 Central Missouri, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 14 Valparaiso.
“[It] was just a huge day for us,” head coach Brad Hagen said.
SHSU moved into traditional team play Saturday with a victory over rival No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, 962-925. The team also defeated Norfolk State, Jackson State and topped top ranked Arkansas State 986-975 but fell to No. 8 Vanderbilt 1,014-913.
Even with the high rolling first two days in the tournament, SHSU wouldn’t be able to bring home first place.
In Sunday’s action, the Bearkats defeated Texas Southern in best-of-seven baker bracket 4-1 but dropped 4-3 matches Nebraska and Arkansas State.
SHSU was still able to take fourth in the challenging competition.
"We had a solid weekend," Hagen said.
The Bearkats will return to action Feb. 14-16 at their host tournament, Track Kat Klash, in Houston.
