Hayden Simerly’s opening homerun to start the bottom of the second wasn’t enough to carry Sam Houston State falling to 1-3 with a 6-3 loss against the University of Houston Tuesday night.

Infield errors and the absence of composure on the mound gave the Cougars nine free bases with five walks and four errors from the seven pitchers circulated from SHSU’s bullpen.

Right hander Michael Burchett loaded the bases allowing a single and allowing three walks to give the Cougars a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. SHSU was unable to respond closing the game with three groundouts.

The Bearkats maintained an early 3-2 lead into the fourth inning but lost fire at the plate, unable to piece together a string of base hits and get runners in scoring position.

Second baseman Ryan Farley went 3-4 at the plate with no one on and was left on base twice during the bottom half of the second and sixth inning.

The Cougars winning pitcher was Jake Lemoine who entered for UH at the top of the seventh inning and closed out with one strikeout and allowed zero runs scored. SHSU pitcher Michale Burchett was charged with his first loss of the season pitching only two-thirds of an inning, tossing 24 pitches between the eighth and ninth inning.

SHSU will remain in Huntsville to begin their three game series against Louisiana-Monroe Friday at 6:30.
