Update Friday, Jan. 10 11 a.m.

Georgia Southern University officially announced former Sam Houston State University head football coach Willie Fritz as their new head coach in a press conference Friday morning.

Georgia Southern’s president Brooks Keel opened the conference discussing the breakthrough highlights for the university during his time as president, alluding to announcement of Fritz as another achievement.

“[Fritz] will take our program into the future and keep our historic past,” Keel said.

Georgia Southern’s Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein discussed the 18-day process it took for the Eagles to find a new head coach, and after contacting Willie Fritz and meeting with him in Dallas, Kleinlein knew Fritz was the coach to uphold the traditions of Georgia Southern and push the team in their continued transition into the Football Bowl Series.

Kleinlein formally announced Fritz as head football coach and Fritz approached the podium with all smiles letting out a cheer for the Eagles before beginning his acceptance and explaining his move to Georgia Southern.

“The winning records attracted us to Georgia Southern,” Fritz said. “We feel home here already.”

Fritz exclaimed his desire to bring the triple-option to Georgia Southern because of its success at SHSU.

“We intend to hit the ground running,” Fritz said. “We're going to run the football and we're going to run it effectively. Our goal is to win every game next year.”

Fritz is the ninth head football coach in Georgia Southern’s history.

Sam Houston State's head football coach Willie Fritz is expected to accept the head coaching position at Georgia Southern, Houstonian sources have confirmed.

Football Scoop broke the story with SB Nation picking up the report shortly thereafter. SHSU fans have surfaced across Twitter and Facebook to voice their gratitude for Fritz and the work he has dedicated to the Bearkats’ football program.

Fritz coached the Bearkats to a 38-16 record during his four-season tenure at SHSU, leading the Bearkats to back-to-back Football Championship Subdivision Division I National Championship appearances in 2012 and 2013 against North Dakota State University. The Bearkats won two consecutive Southland Conference championships under Fritz.

Fritz is joining the leap to Football Bowl Series alongside FCS playoff rival NDSU head coach Craig Bohl.

Last year rumors spread about FBS schools seeking Fritz, but Fritz stayed at SHSU finishing his final season 9-5 as a Bearkat.

The Houstonian will continue to post updates as more information is released.
