Time management and maintaining pressure inside the rim allowed McNeese State to edge out a 58-59 win over the Bearkats in overtime.
McNeese’s ability to capitalize off free throws (100 percent) and SHSU’s inability to capitalize on fast breaks inside the paint closed the Bearkats' lead in the remaining seconds of the second half.
SHSU maintained a comfortable ten point lead producing turnovers and scrambling for lost rebounds for most of the first half. John Thomas and Paul Baxter shot for an early lead attacking seams inside the paint; shooting for 44 percent.
Sinking early shots under the basket and inside the paint gave the Sam Houston State men’s basketball squad an early lead going into the halftime.
Michael Holyfield opened the second half with a thundering dunk to silence McNeese’s early fast breaks
Forward Jeremy McKay and guard Darius Gatson struggled beyond the arc, taking unnecessary shots in hard man coverage.
The Bearkats’ man coverage produced fast breaks and interrupted any shift of momentum McNeese was able to kindle. The Cowboys chipped SHSU’s lead to three (43-40) with an eight point run with 8:35 remaining in the half.
McNeese kept within a five point deficit shooting 93 percent at the free throw line and 37 percent under the basket and were able to close out a late game comeback attacking the paint.
The Bearkats remain at Johnson Coliseum to square off against conference rivals Lamar University Saturday at 3:45.
