It was an all-out brawl (always wanted to use that in a sentence) from the opening bell Saturday in Japan.
The fact that Silva won at the same Japanese arena where he ruled over Pride's Middleweight division made it all the more amazing.
When Stann linked with a thunderous right, Silva smirked and sauntered forward. Stann stood up to the bullying tactics and unloaded punches and low kicks that thudded off Silva's lead thigh. Stann also forced Silva to take a knee twice, but as the celebrated brawler has done many times he quickly regrouped and pushed forward.
"The Axe Murderer" closed the show with a booming left hook that floored Stann. He followed up with four vicious ground strikes that landed clean and knocked Stann out cold before referee Marc Goddard called the fight.
Wanderlei Silva definitely will go down as one of MMA's most brutal finishers. The appropriately named "Axe Murderer" left American Stann in an unconscious heap at 4:08 of Round 2 to conclude the main card of the UFC's sixth trip to the land of the rising sun.
