For the first time, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Friday to make a ruling on two widely-known cases involving gay marriage rights.
The Court will review the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to decide whether the law, which denies federal benefits to same-sex spouses, violates the Constitution. In addition, it will review Proposition 8, a 2008 California law that bans gay marriage. The Court's decision comes after the Mexico Supreme Court ruled a gay marriage ban unconstitutional in one of its southern states on Wednesday. The decision caused uproar on social media from people who criticized the U.S. for being behind in allowing gay marriage.

Both cases will not answer the defining question of whether the Constitution will guarantee equal protection to gay couples or if couples have the right to marry in the U.S. However, the rulings will be a defining moment in the U.S. that could set a legal precedent for future cases on gay marriage.
In November, residents of Washington state, Maryland and Maine voted to allow gay marriage, which could reflect a changing public attitude. Some people took to social media to show their positive beliefs about the Court's upcoming decision.
