The CVA received a stack of cards from friends that they had asked for help.

About 680 veterans and active-duty military personnel will be receiving holiday cards from members of the Sam Houston State University’s College Veterans Association and other volunteers.

Corbett French, CVA president, and his group collected cards from donors and sent them to the American Red Cross. The donors included Alpha Delta Pi, Project Sunshine, Nursing Association, Biology Department and other well-wishers that members knew.

This is the first year that the CVA has done this.

“We look forward to making a tradition out of it,” French said.

French started this initiative because he has been at the receiving end before.

“When I was deployed in 2006, I received a Christmas card from a complete stranger,” French said. “Holidays really aren't the best time for me. But receiving the card made things better. I was very appreciative.”

Ryan Leonard, treasurer of CVA and a veteran, agreed.

“As someone who has been deployed during the holidays, I know that it’s vital for people back home to remind service members that we have not forgotten them,” Leonard said.

French said that it is important to help others who might be missing home.

“I believed this was important for the CVA to do because if it could help me out when I was down, it’s got to help others that are where I was,” French said.

The CVA was established to help veterans transition to college life. It has done its job for Leonard.

“The CVA has been like a family to me and so many other members,” Leonard said. “None of us are from Huntsville, but none of us feel like we’re away from home thanks to the camaraderie that we have within the group.”
