Harlem Shake videos: where did they come from?

The internet has exploded over the past week with colleges, organizations and random people performing in Harlem Shake videos. But why now?

Youtube vlogger Filthy Frank can claim credit as the origin of the crazy video trend known as the Harlem Shake in his video "FILTHY COMPILATION #6 - SMELL MY FINGERS".
He then created an entire video solely out of the first part of the original compilation after requests by other Youtube users.
Five teens in Australia created what we now know as the "Harlem Shake video". One person dances to Baauer's "Harlem Shake" while those around them seem oblivious to their existence.
