President Obama spoke to a joint session of Congress in the State of the Union Tuesday night.

Gay and lesbian service members got more support for equal benefits from their Commander-in-Chief Tuesday night.

President Barack Obama placed his support adjacent to supporting a move to place women in combat during a progressive government State of the Union address.

"We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families – gay and straight. We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families – gay and straight," Obama said.

The statement comes behind a statement by the Pentagon that same-sex military partners will begin to receive some benefits.

Republicans and other conservatives aren't taking kindly to the movement.

“We are on a slippery slope here,” Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.) said to the Washington Post. “Why would the DoD extend benefits to same-sex partners and then deny cohabitation heterosexual couples the same benefits?”

What do you think about same-sex partners receiving military benefits?
