This, the site says, allows students to grow psychologically and physiologically at their own pace and to their needed skill sets.

Because the classrooms contain a wide range of ages, unlike traditional American-style classrooms, that age dominance plays a major role in suppressing child growth. In addition, the method contains little supervision, researchers say, adding to the age dominance and confusion in some adolescents.

The methods main critic was William Heard Kilpatrick of the Columbia University's Teaching College. He developed the Project Method of Education which comparatively to the Montessori Method wasn't a success.
William Heard KilpatrickgeorgiacollegeMontessori returned to Europe in the 1950's and was eventually nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 81.
