The business man, Jin Zengmin, is not alone in his frustration with pollution, but is joined by the majority of the public in China. Another anonymous person even added to Zengmin's dare and offered $48,000 dollars if the environmental official of a nearby county would swim in the polluted rivers located there.
Zengmin's outcry caught the attention of the bureau responsible for environmental issues, and they said that they would make an effort to clean up the river, and would monitor the river to make sure industrial pollutants would not continue to be dumped.
Hu Siya, vice minister of water resources, said that "last year 20 percent of China's rivers were so polluted that their water quality was rated too toxic for human contact, and that up to 40 percent of the rivers were seriously polluted, according to state media."
