As temperatures in Walker County change rapidly season to season, many might experience aches and pains.
Changes in weather can cause migraines, damp weather can cause joint pain, and cold weather can trigger asthma attacks, according to the website WebMD.
The site said that a sudden drop in temperature can be the reason a migraine can arise. According to Richard Lipton, M.D., director of the Montefiore Headache Center, some people who live in areas where the weather changes often tend to have serious migraine pain. He used New York as an example.
"I had a patient here in New York who moved to Arizona and experienced an astounding improvement in her migraines," Lipton said.
Lipton also said people should record when their migraines occur. If the change in weather is the cause, they should consult with their doctor for pretreatment to avoid the start of pain.
Chilly and damp weather can cause joint pain as well. It can usually be treated by a heating pack and non-weight bearing exercises, according to WebMD.
“Baseline pain appears to be strongly affected by a drop in temperature and a change in humidity,” Javad Parvizi, MD, Ph.D, a joint specialist at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital said. Almost 80 percent to 90 percent of patients feel a difference in their pain’s intensity and sensitivity."
According to WebMD, the inflaming of airways can trigger asthma. Cold weather can be the reason for airways to swell.
“When breathing in fast, the air they exchange doesn't have a chance to warm up,” David Hagaman, MD, medical director at the Vanderbilt Asthma, Sinus and Allergy Program said.
Pollen is also carried by thunderstorms, which can also cause asthma. According to WebMD wind from thunderstorms can bring pollen up from the ground level, which causes a lot of asthma attacks.
According to Weather Channel website, during winter is when Huntsville’s temperature drops considerably. The average temperature for October is 59 degrees, and the coldest month is January when the temperature drops on average to 40 degrees.
