A Sam Houston State University student was killed in a two car accident, Thursday morning, while exiting the Gateway Apartment Complex on Sam Houston Ave.

Nontraditional freshman, 24-year-old Robert Edward McCurry was turning left and traveling towards the university when his two-door car was struck by a 19-year-old man traveling southbound on Sam Houston Ave. in a black, Dodge pick-up truck.

"It appeared that McCurry was exiting the complex onto a larger road, failed to yield the right away and pulled out in front of the other vehicle," Huntsville Police Department Detective, James Barnes, said.

According to the Huntsville Item, the truck was in the left lane when it directly hit the driver's side door sending the maroon, Dodge Stratus spinning off the road and into the grass.

Neither of the two vehicles' airbags deployed.

Emergency personnel had to remove the door of the car to reach McCurry, who was life flighted to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, but was pronounced dead one minute after his arrival at 9:10 a.m.

Several officers responded to multiple calls from witnesses including advanced accident reconstructionist, Officer Scott Mitchell, who is in charge of the scene and investigation.

Police said that there are no indications that alcohol, excessive speed, or cell phone usage were involved or are underlying causes for the accident.

"We are still waiting on the official cause of death," Barnes said. "There is still an ongoing investigation and we're still looking at some factors, but there's no reason to believe that it was anything but an accident. "

The driver of the truck survived the accident with minor injuries.

Barnes said the police department has seen a number of traffic accidents in this specific area between Sycamore Ave. and Highway 19, where the speed limit is set at 50 mph.

"I would highly caution everyone to be careful," Barnes said. "People pull out and are driving fast; it's a hard turn because you have to go across almost four lanes to get going if you're going north."

The detective said he does not have the official statistics for the number of accidents that occur on average each semester in Huntsville, but he said the numbers tend to go up this time of year.

"Huntsville in general is busy at this time because the school kids and the college kids are going back to class," Barnes said.

"Most of the accidents are minor, although this unfortunately happened we are lucky that it is the exception, but whether one death or ten deaths, one is way too many," he said.

This was McCurry's first semester at SHSU as a biology major.

"He was only here for two days," Dean of Students, John Yarabeck, said. "Funeral arrangements have not been announced, but on behalf of the university a plant will be sent to his wife."
