The department of theatre and musical theatre’s annual fundraising gala aims to raise money for scholarships to deserving students.
“Much of the departments’ success lies in the ability to attract and retain some of the best talent in this region by providing much needed scholarship opportunities,” chair of the theatre and musical theatre department Penny Hasekoester said.
This year’s Gala is dedicated to JD and Ethel Nicholson, who have been long time patrons of the department. The theme will be “One Enchanted Evening” featuring music of Rogers and Hammerstein during a musical meal and performance.
“She especially enjoyed our musicals,” Hasekoester said. “It seems fitting that we honor her with a gala whose music exemplifies the best of the musical theatre genre.”
The evening begins with patrons being driven to the Performing Arts Center from the parking lot and then seated in the lobby. The entire building will be filled with decorations, donated items for the silent auction and performing arts students who will assume the role of server.
Senior musical theatre majors will sing classic R&H, like “Kansas City”, “Sound of Music” and “June is Bustin’ Out All Over”, while the patrons eat.
After the meal, attendees will move to the dance theatre to watch the most elaborate and entertaining part of the event – a revue of R&H shows.
The show will feature musical numbers and characters from “Oklahoma”, “Sound of Music”, “Shall We Dance”, “South Pacific”, “Carousel” and “Cinderella”.
Money from the event go toward scholarships for theatre and musical theatre students and are handed out at the end of every year to students who have shown hard work, determination and talent.
“The evening promises to be a fun event,” said Ronald Shields, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication. “But the real joy and fulfillment is being able to put the funds raised back into the mission of supporting the great talents of our students.”
The Theatre & Musical Theatre Annual Scholarship Gala will be held in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Art Center at 6 p.m on Friday, Sept. 20. Ticket prices have yet to be announced.
