Steam, a digital marketplace for buying and downloading games, has reached 65 million users, surpassing Xbox’s numbers according to TheVerge.com
Steam’s business model of direct download of videogames was originally met with some criticism upon it’s inception 10 years ago since purchasers lack physical copies of games, and instead sell licenses attached to Steam user accounts.
The business model, however, has allowed the service to offer games at deeper discounts than physical copies could be sold for, something steam reinforces through it’s daily, weekly, and seasonal sales, the most famous of which is their “Steam Summer Sale” where top games sell for up to 75% off their retail price.
Physical media still dominates the console market, and if X box’s failed plans to move the X box One away from discs are any indication, it is likely to stay that way for some time.
