WARNING: This contains spoilers!
It’s that time of year again: the Pretty Little Liars Halloween special premiered tonight on ABC Family, in continuation of its fourth season. Sort of.
The special began with all the girls heading to a Halloween shindig in the heart of the cemetery (typical, yet appropriate) in Ravenswood. As always, Aria Montgomery(Lucy Hale), Spencer Hastings(Troian Bellisario), Emily Fields(Shay Mitchell), and Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) show up conveniently, impeccably dressed on their suspenseful adventures.
They spend the bulk of the episode running around losing each other and themselves in the cemetery and the mansion near it, all in the name of finding who they suspect is Alison in the flesh. Spencer gets knocked out by a Bane-like man, or woman, in a gas mask. There is no reason to worry here; the girl reunite, find Spencer, and wake her up. When she awakes she blurts out, “Where is he?”
Many fans thought the Halloween special to be the beginning of the second half of the fourth season. The special was a one night only premiere. People may resent the fact that they have to wait until January 2014 to see the rest of the season.
This premiere finally answers the grueling question that has needed an answer since the show first began: Is Alison still alive?
The series began with four girls trying to figure out what exactly happened to their friend Alison DeLaurentes(Sasha Pierterse). knew that their friend was not a saint. What they didn’t know is that she was personally and maybe romantically connected to Rosewood’s local detective, Wilden.
In the final minutes of the special, there is a dramatic pause in which the girls are standing behind the infamous “Red Coat”. Just when there should be a commercial break the figure turns around to face the girls. It is indeed Alison.
At the end of the first half of season four, Ezra shows up in a place that makes the audience believe he could be “A”. He could be the one tormenting the girls, and the one Alison is afraid of. Ezra has become a creeper and Alison now appears to be the real victim in the situation. There are still no straight forward sign of who is actually pulling all the strings.
To the double the creepy factor, ABC Family also showed Ravenswood directly after PLL. The spinoff picks up right where PLL Halloween special left off, in the cemetery. At the last minute, Hanna allows Caleb(Tyler Blackburn) to help a girl he met on his way to Ravenswood, Miranda(Nicole Gale Anderson).
In the recap to Blackburn’s live chat he said,” He will do long distance with Hanna, but I don’t know how easy that will remain.”
Fans suspect that Caleb and Miranda will get a little too cozy and Hanna will be gone from the picture. It is difficult to detach the Ravenswood Caleb to the one in PLL. There are rumors that Hanna will make a cameo in the fifth episode of the spinoff. The audience will see how the dynamics between the two have remained the same and/or changed with Miranda around.
Fan may resent the fact that Pretty Little Liars will not continue their second part of their fourth season until January, but there is Ravenswood in the meantime. Ravenswood will air every Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC Family.
