Another Percy Jackson flick? Don't get me wrong, the Lightning Thief was an interesting attempt, but was there really a need for a new film? According to production company Fox 2000, it is.
Who's returning? Despite the audience's reception of the original film the three leads are all returning to continue the project; Logan Lerman as Percy, Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth and Brandon T. Jackson as setyr guardian, Grover.
What new adventures awaits Percy and his friends? According to imdb.com the new movie, Percy Jackson:Sea of Monsters, is based upon the story line of the Rick Riordans book, The Sea of Monsters. The team has the objective to retrieve the golden fleece from the prospective sea and use it to save Camp Half-Blood.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure how to take this news of a new film. I saw the original, and yes it was somewhat exciting at times and take on the gods were interesting, but overall I really wasn't impressed with it. Avid readers of the series apparently weren't either because it didn't follow the story line as close as was hoped.
I really believe that this film, though being shown as an action/ adventure film, will be better received as a family adventure film and really lose the older audiences, if it hasn't already. Mostly because it's based on a younger reader's book series but also, if it follows the production pattern of the first film, it's without the excitement and finesse of movies that appeal to the older audience members.
Additionally, with it being not so well received I cannot see how they would've gotten adequate funding for all of the CGI and special effects work that will be needed to adequately portray they story in the new film. However, I will give the crew the benefit of the doubt, because truly anything is possible in Hollywood.
The trailer, according to comingsoon.net, is supposed to premiere before showings of The Host next week, but I really don't hold high hopes for it.
